BAND ADDICTION OF THE WEEK: FLYLEAF

Linda
Linda Oct 10, 2008

FLYLEAF

Flyleaf is an American alternative rock band that formed in the Belton[1] and Temple, Texasregions in 2000. They performed around the United States in 2003 until releasing their eponymous debut album, Flyleaf, in 2005. The band won an online poll on yahoo.com and was named Yahoo!'s Who's Next band of the month in March 2006 and they were named MTV's artist of the week on December 24, 2007.

.... What first made my listen to them was just the reason my best friend used to love them, so i downloaded some songs. And yes i fell in love with it. It’s just amazing, and i love Lacey voice, its so much power & energy mixed with the feelings and movements while playing.

Cd/dvd you should hear: The flyleaf live cd/dvd including acoustic versons of Fully Alive, Red Sam, Cassie, I’m So Sick & All Around Me.  There are also three musicvideos included on the dvd..

BAND HISTORY

·         Early on Lacey Mosley started playing music with James Culpepper. Guitarists Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya were later recruited. "Sameer and Jared are really experimental with melodies and pedals, and we all had different influences that were all blending together with the same passionate and hopeful heart, and that brought out this beautiful feeling. It was magical," said Mosley.Bassist Pat Seals joined in 2000 after leaving his previous band The Grove.

CHRISTIAN FAITH.

·         All five members of the band are of the Christian faith. This faith influences their music, but lead singer Lacey Mosley doesn't necessarily believe that makes Flyleaf strictly a Christian band. "We all share the same faith. And so when we deal with the whole 'Christian band thing,' we kind of think about something P.O.D. says, like, 'If you're a Christian, it affects everything in your life. So if you're a plumber, does that make you a Christian plumber?' "

·         Mosley said. "I don't know the answer. We're a band, it's part of who we are, so it comes out in our music, and it's the fuel for what we do. And finding faith saved my life. So I'm not ashamed of it at all. And most of our album reflects that."

·         The band's music has received mainstream and Christian success. For example, the song I'm So Sick appears on Rock Band, a currently popular game involving guitar and drum controllers as well as a microphone. Perfect appears on Guitar Praise, a Christian video game using a guitar controller as seen in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games.

BAND ADDICTION OF THE WEEK - AVENGED SEVENFOLD

Linda
Linda Sep 28, 2008

I will try to write at least one new journal every week about some new band/artist I’ve discovered or just a band I like very much at the moment. And then maybe even some songs I recommend you to hear.  So I’m just gonna start with this week. Week 39 I guess.  And this weeks band is AVENGED SEVENFOLD!

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE BAND.

·         Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) is an American rock band from Huntington Beach, California. They have achieved mainstream success with the 2005 album City of Evil, which spawned singles such as "Bat Country", "Beast and the Harlot" and "Seize the Day". The band's success followed with their self-titled album, Avenged Sevenfold with singles such as "Almost Easy", "Afterlife", "Dear God" and most recently "Scream".

·         Record you must hear: Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the rough!!

It’s just simply fantastic, I love it. It’s pretty new, it got out September 16th I think. Live in the LBC is from a live concert (taste of chaos) filmed april 20th this year. It’s also small clips from 10/15 minutes before going on stage on about 30 concerts, which might also be very fun [including A7X in the Jacuzzi, Syn&Zacky on cam feeling a little bit weird, M Shadows In the shower and so much more] When talking about Diamonds in the rough, it contains many new songs but also Almost Easy, Afterlife [alternate version], and a cover of Pantera’s walk. Absolutely recommended, I would’ve given it 5 out of 6.

·         “The Deathbat” The band sports a logo known as the "Deathbat". It was originally designed by an artistic high school friend of Avenged Sevenfold, Micah Montague, as seen on the bands first DVD, All Excess, though Cameron Rackam has done many more pieces for the bands albums. the Deathbat has appeared on all of the band's album covers (save the cover of their first full-length, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet", on which the logo was shown on the CD itself, not the cover of the album), as well as the covers of a number of singles such as "Bat Country" and "Critical Acclaim."

Genre

·         Avenged Sevenfold's material ranges across many genres, often leaving the concept of genres altogether (especially in their most recent album). For example, Avenged Sevenfold's debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet consisted almost entirely of a metalcore or post-hardcore sound, however consisted of several deviations to these genres, most notably in "Streets" which adopts a punk style, and "Warmness on the Soul", which consists of mainly piano, and could be considered soft rock. Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album, again, consists of several deviations to less consistent genres and styles from the album's main hard rock and heavy metal songs, most notably in "Dear God", which adopts a country style, and "A Little Piece of Heaven", which includes elements of Broadway show tunes, using primarily brass instruments and stringed orchestra to take over most of the role of the lead and rhythm guitar. The band has, changed considerably since its first album, which was characterized as very heavy, to being more of a hard rock type band.

·         They are highly credited for bringing the traditional hard rock/heavy metal sound (that bands like Guns N' Roses and Metallica created) back to the public eye.

My Chemical Romance - The World Is Ugly

Linda
Linda May 10, 2008
Are you thinking of him?
The world is ugly,

And you wanted me to go.
I just wanted you to know

That the world is ugly,
But you're beautiful to me.
Are you thinking of me?
Are you thinking of him?

You can say I told you so
If you wanted me to go.

I just wanted you to know
That the world is ugly,
But you're beautiful to me.

Are you thinking of me?
Are you thinking of him?

You can say I told you so
If you wanted me to go.

I just wanted you to know.

The world is ugly,
But you're beautiful to me.
Are you thinking of me?

Can we both be ugly?
Are you thinking I'm the one?
We could fight it to the end.
I just wanna hold your hand.

And you're probably just too good.
I just wanted you to know.

Survey. [stole it from Kristine, who stoled it from Mell ^^]

My Chemical Romance Article // Teenagers Feb '08 Issue

Linda
Linda Feb 05, 2008
From a Singapore magazine.
The boys of My Chemical Romance have quite a reputation for being over-flamboyant and theatrical – from their music videos to their stage performances, the goth-rock band holds no qualms in strutting about with wild, reckless abandon. And coupled with their love for dramatic makeup and tight black clothes, My Chemical Romance have reached out unconditionally to champion “the broken, the beaten and the damned”.

And so, when Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Frank Iero, Ray Toro and Bob Bryar finally make it to Singapore for one-night-only concert, they bring along with them an impending sense of doom and gloom. Surprisingly though, My Chemical Romance aren’t the mad-set depressives they make themselves out to be.

I’m Not Okay
Frontman Gerard and the guys live up to their reputation: On stage, Gerard unleashes his manic energy as he leaps and bounces around, alternating between empathic screams and heartfelt serenades.

“It’s hard to put yourself out there and be such an open book with people.” Gerard reveals candidly, “You can get hurt. You make a record, and if it’s not what the majority loves, that will hurt. It happens on stage too. You put yourself on the chopping block.”

You wonder what he means, watching the band play on stage. As they careen about in front of their pitch black backdrop, you realize that the My Chemical Romance concert is akin to a theatre performance set to a dramatic soundtrack.

And with their frenzied fans in the mosh pit, the quintet feds of public love. Mikey tells us that one of the reasons why his band is always so exhausted is because they put so much into their performances. Other rockers would go on stage, belt out a couple of songs with robotic precision, and then thrash a guitar or two. My Chemical Romance lets it all out. “I don’t understand how a band can do that, you know, standing up there like they’re punching their cards like this is a job. For us, we don’t know any other way! This is how we’ve been playing since the beginning!”

Gerard chimes in, “If you don’t let anybody in, it wouldn’t be great. Opening yourself up is what makes it great. Letting people in, taking the rest, putting your heart out there … that’s what makes it great.”

Stage Antics
You can’t deny that the New Jersey rockers put in a lot of thought into their shows, evident at their concert at the MAX Pavilion at the Singapore Expo. Boys and girls alike squeeze themselves into black shirts and jeans that are a size too small. Some even have their faces painted to look like their onstage idols. And when My Chemical Romance burst into crowd favorites like Helena, I’m Not Okay (I Promise) and I Don’t Love You, the fervent devotees sang along at the top of their voices.

“There’s nothing that comes close to it,” Gerard gushes enthusiastically about his fans. “It’s the single most rewarding feeling in the world, like it beats anything. Like the fact that you can write and play something, it’s just amazing.” The band admits that most of the songs were written in their bedrooms, where the quintet worked hard to perfect their craft. And to have hundreds of thousands of people singing along to their songs has always been the biggest reward they could ever hope for.

“It’s special,” Bob adds, “especially when it happens around the world.”

Teenage Troubles
The band received one of the biggest responses from the Singapore crowd when they played their new song, Teenagers. Hot off the band’s The Black Parade album, Teenagers is a fast-paced song with a bopping beat that is made of equal parts unrequited anger and unspoken fear.

Gerard reminisces about the beginnings of the song, “I was riding the train to rehearsals in New York, and I found that I became very paranoid; I felt that I was very much out of touch with living a normal life. And every time school let out, I was very scared and didn’t know why. Everything just made me nervous because I was afraid of what kind of attention I would draw to myself. I always get nervous on subways but one day, I wrote the lyrics and melody in my head. I practiced it and showed it to everybody and most people thought I was crazy!”

The outspoken frontman of the group considers Teenagers to be the craziest song on the record – it stands out because the pop/punk influences is such an aural contrast from the goth-rock atmosphere on the rest of the album. He reveals that the five of them had many “heated debates” over whether to even include the song on the CD.

“It’s a really serious song, and it’s important for this band and the record.” Gerard explains the motivations behind the song. “We needed the lyrics to really drive the point home and what we’re trying to say. It’s a very important song because it talks about teenagers and violence, and how there are groups of them who feel that they can only solve their problems with violence. A lot of them are made to feel invisible, and this addresses a lot of issues about kids lashing out against other kids and against society.”

Never Judge

Linda

NEVER JUDGE

I look at you
scanning you from top to toe.
You don't have pretty eyes,
and your nose is too big.

You're a little fat,
and i have a problem with
finding anything positive
about you.

And just when i'm looking
you also have a very bad taste
of clothes and fasion.
But i guess you don't care.

You never care.
Not about your friends,
and especially not about your family.
What's wrong with you?

Is there any sense in your head?
Are you always this stupid?
Why do you always have to judge people,
when you don't even know them.

It's just not fair.

Just try to be like me,
I never judge others.
To me people can wear whatever they want,
and listen to what they want.

Why do you care?
Just stop judging.

You're so stupid.

I’m sitting here alone
in the dark with a lie
I’m thinking of something bad
in my hand holding a tie

what is the point of laughing
what is the point to care
I’m so tired of living
I’m so sick of beeing here

never ever will I cry
I will hide my little lie
that I don’t want to live more
that all I want is to die

I put the tie around my neck
I’m ready to let go
but then I stop up and think
my friends, I love them so

they are the point of laughing
they are the point of care
they are a reason of living
and a reason of beeing here

and then I cry..
